Choosing Healthy Foods For Your Dog
By Kirsten Hawkins
Today’s pet food market is larger and more diverse than ever before. While this offers a large number of choices in various types of pet food, it also presents a dilemma in choosing the healthiest food for your dog. Are generic or store brands suitable for a dog? What about familiar name brands like Purina and Alpo? Are the pricier brands that advertise specially formulated ingredients (Science Diet, Eukanuba) really living up to their claims and worth the extra money? All of these are valid questions that loving dog owners deserve to have answered.

Dog Food Considerations

There are several factors to consider when choosing the right food for your dog. Different dogs have different nutritional needs at different stages in their lives. Some things to consider when selecting the food you’ll give your dog follow.

• The Dog’s Age

Puppies have different nutritional requirements than adult dogs just as human children have different needs than adult people. Senior dogs also have different requirements than younger adult dogs. Make sure that you select a food that is appropriate for your dog’s stage in life.

• The Dog’s Health

Does your dog have a specific medical condition? If so, the food you choose may need to be partially dictated by that condition. Diabetic dogs need low-glucose foods and

Thanksgiving 2008
Roti (Roppongi) - Roti's creative four-course menu includes delectables like Louisana shrimp and crab tian; roast duck breast with dark cherries and pumpkin mash; warm spinach and artichoke salad with crisp pancetta and pine nuts; and wild-mushroom, roquefort and caramelized onion tart.

The main event is an oven-roasted turkey with sausage chestnut dressing, herbed giblet gravy and winter vegetables. A selection of American wines are hand-picked to match the menu. Y6500, with two seatings on Thursday evening from 6-8:30 and 9-late.

There's also a more informal Thanksgiving Family brunch, Sunday (11/30) from noon-5pm; a three-course menu is Y3500, and the children's menu is Y1900. Vegetarian menus are available with advance booking. 03-5785-3671....

Review - Elevage: Nishi-Azabu
The sign outside of Elevage reads simply, "Rare wine and spirits," but one look inside and wine lovers will swoon, whiskey connoisseurs will drool. Racks stocked with hundreds of bottles of whiskey, brandy, and Calvados flank the entrance, while an army of wine bottles stands proudly behind the glass wall to the right. Hidden away in Nishi-Azabu, this quiet little bar is a great place for aficionados and novices alike to broaden their drinking horizons.

The Wagner-loving Yoshida-san will be more than happy to guide you through the daily-changing list of wines by the glass. It typically features around fifteen wines - reds, whites, sparklers, and dessert wines, as well as a couple of sake selections, ranging in price from Y600 - Y4000.

Park yourself at the bar to learn the proper way to open a wine bottle from Yoshida-san, or relax with your drink at the table by the window. Snack on assorted charcuterie (Y2000) while you thumb through the extensive menu and contemplate your next selection. Prices aren't cheap, but Elevage is one of the few bars in Tokyo where you can order wines like Clos des Lambraye Grand Cru and Chateau d'Yquem by the glass.
Review - Armwood Cottage: Shinjuku Gyoen-mae
True to its name, the Armwood Cottage is Tokyo's answer to a log cabin in the mountains, with tall concrete buildings standing in for trees. The space is intimate and inviting, dominated by rough wooden surfaces and decorated with rustic kitsch - a deer head trophy here, model vintage trucks there.

Above-average cafe standards like rice bowls and pastas are on offer at lunchtime (Y850), with more serious food in the evening (stewed spareribs for Y1500 are their specialty). Beer and wine start at Y600, cocktails at Y750. It's the perfect place to have a drink after taking a leisurely stroll through nearby Shinjuku Gyoen: draft beer, wine, and sangria are half price every day from 6-8pm.
